Dropshipping and print-on-demand both let you sell through your own store while another company fulfills orders. Print-on-demand adds your design to a product only after an order. Affiliate marketing sends buyers to another seller and pays a commission, so you generally do not own checkout or fulfillment. Choose by the work you want to do and the customer relationship you want to own.

Compare the jobs, not just startup cost
In dropshipping, you select existing products, set the offer and price, and remain responsible for customer experience while a supplier ships. In print-on-demand, a partner prints your design on an item after purchase; creative work and design rights matter, while the fulfillment partner still controls production quality and speed. In affiliate marketing, you create content that sends a buyer to someone else's store. You do not normally set the final product price or handle support, and commission terms can change.
Where control and risk sit
- Dropshipping: more control over store, product mix and customer relationship; more responsibility for supplier quality, returns and acquisition.
- Print-on-demand: useful when original designs are the differentiator; sample each material and print process, and test whether production plus shipping leaves a margin.
- Affiliate: lower fulfillment burden; more dependence on traffic, audience trust and another company's program terms.
Shopify's explanation of ecommerce versus dropshipping is a reminder that “ecommerce” describes selling online while “dropshipping” describes one way to fulfill the order. These models can even coexist: a content site may use affiliate links, while a store tests a small dropship catalog and later develops a product.
A sensible first test for each
For dropshipping, validate one buyer problem, sample a product and model the complete order margin. For print-on-demand, show design concepts to a relevant audience and order a sample before accepting customer orders. For affiliate, publish a genuinely useful comparison with clear disclosure and see whether qualified readers trust it enough to click. Test one path well instead of opening three half-finished businesses.
If you want an owned product brand but cannot hold stock yet, the dropshipping startup sequence gives the next decisions.
Choose the model whose hard part you are willing to do: supplier and support work, design and audience building, or sustained content and referral trust.
