Post-purchase email should first confirm the order, explain fulfillment and delivery, then help the buyer use or care for the product. Ask for feedback only after they have had time to receive it. Separate transactional messages from optional marketing, respect consent and make unsubscribing from marketing straightforward.

The first message is operational
The order confirmation should state what was purchased, the amount, shipping destination, expected next step and support route. If an item is delayed, say so promptly instead of filling the gap with promotional email. The shipping and returns guide explains why supplier handoff and your customer promise must agree.
Then make ownership easier
At dispatch, send accurate tracking and a realistic delivery expectation. After delivery, offer concise setup, use or care guidance matched to the product. Later, ask a neutral feedback question and make support easy if something went wrong. Only then consider a relevant replenishment or complementary-product recommendation, and only to customers who have consented to marketing where required.
Measure help, not just open rate
Look at delivery-status inquiries, support resolution, returns, repeat orders and unsubscribes. A high open rate on an order update is not proof customers want more promotions. Shopify's marketing-performance guidance helps separate channel results; record the cost and revenue associated with any paid follow-up as well.
Do not automate a request for a five-star review, and never imply a review is from a customer if it is not. A helpful sequence makes the service promise tangible after the checkout—often the moment when a new store most needs trust. Shopify's contact-collection guidance says promotional messages should go to people who agreed to receive them. For US recipients, the FTC's CAN-SPAM guide distinguishes commercial from transactional messages and explains opt-out duties; requirements vary by market, so have local rules checked before automating.
Write the order confirmation, shipping update and one useful care email first; add promotional follow-up only after consent and real customer questions justify it.
